What are Rahu and Ketu ?
Rahu and Ketu, or Chhaya Grahas, are unique among the other solar system planets. They are shadow planets in the system that do not have any form. Instead, they are transiting points where the Moon’s path intercepts the path of the Earth around the Sun. They are Invisible compared to Venus and Mars, but they are believed to have karmic relations and exert powerful influences in Vedic astrology. The North Node of the Moon is also referred to as Rahu, while the South Node is known as Ketu. As per the Puranas, the gods won the war and acquired the nectar of immortality (Amrit) during Samudra Manthan. Then, Lord Vishnu, who was disguised as Mohini, was distributing the amrit among the devas. A demon (rakshasa), known as Svarbhanu, dressed up as a god and had taken a sip of the nectar. Lord Vishnu immediately recognized the trickery and killed the demon with his Sudarshan Chakra, cutting him into two halves—the head turned into Rahu, and the tail turned into Ketu. This is how Rahu and Ketu came into existence.
